Half Overlay Center Indexed

Half Overlay Center IndexedHalf-overlay and flush-inset drawers work quite well with true center registration. All drawers have the same top and bottom drawer box face reveal. The one potential issue is that undermount (37 BC ... and Tandembox, 33 BC) drawer layouts work much better with shifted system holes and bottom mount (typ. < 22 BC) layouts work much better when face edges fall on system holes. Note that center indexing bottom mount boxes only works with applied bottom drawer boxes. Side mount slides work either way.

Half Overlay Center IndexedThe only difference between the half-overlay and railed inset flush layouts are that the system rows are moved back the thickness of the faces and the drawer faces are 22mm shorter (and narrower, -11 all edges).

All system registered half-overlay/railed inset cabinets have slide bottom clearances of 32mm - 1/2 panel thickness (e.g. 32 - 9.5 = 22.5 BC). For shifted registration its 48mm (32+16) - 1/2 panel thickness (e.g. 48 - 9.5 = 38.5 BC).

I'm reviewing your drawing and noticed the bottom box for Bottom Mount is 271 but I'm calculating it to be 258 using 32m-r-g or (32*10)-(2*29.5)-3. Am I using the wrong calculation?

You are right, that bottom drawer box would/should be 258. The calculation for Bottom Mount with Overlay Bottom drawer boxes is:

Side offset = slide offset - bottom thickness (e.g. 14 - 13 = 1)
Box Side = 32*n + side offset*2 (e.g. 32*3 + 1*2 = 98)

32m + 2 in this case (32 x n + 2 BS drawing spec)

... or face multiple - 62 (inverse + 32), e.g. 320 - (30 + 32) = 258

I'm trying to calculate "usable space" for drawers in order to determine during the planning phase whether a given drawer increment is large enough to fit desired contents.

That said, for Half Overlay cabinets with side mount drawer slides, it appears there's a loss of 32mm from the center of the bottom stretcher to the top of the bottom of the drawer box and 9.5mm from the center of the top stretcher to the top of the drawer opening.

Is it correct that "usable space" can therefore be calculated as 32m - 32 - 9.5 - 1 (desired space at the top so things don't get jammed up)?

Yes, that's pretty close to the usable drawer space for that drawing. With side-mount it doesn't matter how you do inset drawer bottoms, the example looks like 1/4" bottoms inset 12mm (12-13 is only required for under-mount slides)... Drawer box to crossmember clearance also plays a role, its 4mm in the side mount drawings (32m-BoxSide-PanelThickness / 2)... Bottom loss would be ((32m-BS) / 2) + (DrawerBottom inset + DB thickness), pretty darn close to your 32mm for the example drawing. I'd do at least PT/2 + 3 (VS your 1) for the top loss and use a maximum of 32m - PT - 6 for BS height (drawing is -8).
