Closets

Cabinetry for closets, pantries, garages, etc. are typically relatively simple and made from a durable melamine coated material. I have classified any cabinetry made of melamine and used in storage areas as 'Closets'.

European closet systems (like European cabinets) utilize a metal rail screwed to the wall. Special adjustable brackets are mounted to the cabinet-like side panels and hung on the rail. With cabinets the rails are hidden behind the cabinet backs. With closets there's no backs so the rails are made more visually acceptable with a plastic molding that snaps over the rails.

I've developed a system that does away with the visible rail and brackets. I use hidden keyhole brackets mortised into the back edge of the vertical panels. The panels are hung from screws driven through the drywall and into the house framing (studs). The result is cleaner and stronger than the typical European style hanging closet system.

Panel and shelving material is typically high quality 3/4" white or maple melamine and edge-banded with matching PVC. Closet rod is chrome plated steel. Special steel pinned shelf supports are recessed into the shelves. Standard drawers have 5/8" while melamine bottoms/backs and steel sides.

Standard Closet

Standard ClosetA typical 24" deep closet is usually divided up into some combination of hanging rods and shelves, sometimes drawers. The use of double rods - one at 40" from the floor and one at 80" - is a popular way to increase hanging space. A short section of rod 70" off the floor can be included for hanging longer items. Because the rods and shelves are adjustable, the layout can be changed. In the example image, the lower two shelves on the left could be removed and the rod moved up to 70".

O'Gorman Master Closet

O'Gorman Master ClosetThe O'Gorman master closet has a good mix of closet rod, drawers and shelves. The island unit divides the room into his and her sides and has shelves on both sides as well as on the end. The shelf and drawer unit on the back wall has a drawer bank on each side and a shared shelf section in the middle. Kathleen got more hanging space as well as an extra set of drawers. The material is 3/4" Maple print melamine throughout and the drawers are all 1/2" white melamine and have full extension slides.

Rosen Pantry

PantryThis pantry also serves as a wine cellar. The pantry shelves were built around an unmovable gas line, a jog in the wall and a large beam in the ceiling. The material is 3/4" nutmeg cherry melamine throughout. There are no visible/surface fasteners. All trim was scribed and then snapped into place using special hardware. To provide access to the rear of the entertainment center (other side of the wall), wainscot with an access door was used (a simple custom pull was added later).

Engerman Wine Rack

Ingerman Wine RackI built this for Doug's wine room. Its made of 3/4" Cherry melamine with the exception of the trim which is stained Hemlock. Its a single cabinet that I drew in CAD, made in the shop and assembled on site. Its designed to hold 12 bottles per cubbyhole. I prefer to install prefinished trim and I'm not sure why the trim on this cabinet was finished in place. I was able to get another (lousy) picture, with the trim finished, while Doug was moving in (some bottles on the rack).
